Karval First Astronomy Tour

On August 21 and 22, 2009 approximately 100 people enjoyed the First Astronomy Tour supported by the Karval Alliance. Mr. Ben Wentworth, a retire Science teacher and teacher of Astronomy at the Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind in Colorado Springs, with the help of other Astronomers, did the PowerPoint Presentation on Astronomy on Friday night and Saturday at the Karval Lake.

Karval and Karval Lake is recognized  as one of the best "dark sky" viewing in the continental United States. You can get information on viewing the stars and planets on the website of cleardarksky/Karval, Co.  The Karval Alliance offered free bus rides to the lake on Fri and Sat nights.

On Saturday morning Mr. Bentworth set up special tents made by the North Star Co. These tents are used to teach the Blind and Visually impaired students on where the planets are during the 4 seasons. Visitors were able to touch maps of the constellations painted on the inside of the special tents. A regular sundial and one used by the students was also demonstrated as well as how they find the North star. Special Powerful Telescopes were used to look at spots on the Sun. The Karval Senior Class had concessions at the lake on Saturday afternoon.

Saturday evening started at 5:30pm with a juicyburger supper sponsored by the Karval Alliance at the Community Building followed by another PowerPoint presentation and viewing of the stars at night at the Lake.
