Astronomy Event

There’s an advantage to being small and isolated.  Karval is one of the best “dark sky” viewing venues in the continental United States.

Ben Wentworth and other Colorado Springs amateur astronomers will bring excellent equipment to the Karval Lake Wildlife Area through which you can observe the heavens on Friday, August 21, and Saturday, August 22.  The events are free, but bring a lawn chair and mosquito repellent.

Mr. Wentworth, father of Hugo Methodist minister Ben Wentworth, is a retired science teacher.   He will give Powerpoint presentations about astronomy at Karval Lake on both Friday and Saturday nights beginning at 8:15 p.m.

The Karval Alliance will be supporting the event by offering free bus rides to the lake from the Karval Community Building at 7:30 p.m. both nights.  The bus will return to town at 10 p.m. Since parking is limited at the lake and the ground is uneven viewers are encouraged to leave the driving to us.

On Saturday, the astronomers will host a variety of activities starting at 10 a.m.  Visitors will be able to touch maps of the constellations, use a sundial, and safely look for spots on the sun through powerful telescopes.  Limited concessions will be available at Karval Lake during the afternoon.

On Saturday night at 5:30 p.m. the public is invited to a juicyburger supper sponsored by the Karval Alliance at the Community Building.  The meal is $5 and features a juicyburger, potato salad, baked beans, homemade pie, and a drink.  Those  planning to attend the meal are encouraged to RSVP to Cherry Stogsdill at 446-892-0021, or e-mail the Karval.org website.

The Branding Iron Calf-A is open until 6:30 p.m. on Friday evening and from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
